Transition to Work program

This program provides additional supports for Nunavummiut making the move from income support to work for the first time, whether in the traditional or wage economy. Recipients without dependents may receive $175 per month to a maximum of 4 months for full-time employment; recipients with dependents may receive $350 per month to a maximum of 4 months for full-time employment. One-way airfare from the recipient's home community to an employer point of hire site in Nunavut or the Northwest Territories may be provided in order for the recipient to secure and begin employment.

Who Can Participate?

Nunavummiut who have been on Income Support for 3 consecutive months and are working at least 24 hours per week are eligible to participate.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 59 years
  • Be a resident of Nunavut
  • Currently be in receipt of income support (for 3 consecutive months).
  • Provide proof of a formal offer from an employer confirming employment
  • Not have received benefits under the Transition to Work program before

How to Apply:

Contact your local Income Support Worker, Regional Supervisor for Income Support or Career Development Officer for information on how to participate in the Transition to Work program. An Income Support Agreement and action plan must be completed prior to receiving benefits.

The Transition to Work program is a funded under the Government of Canada’s Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA). LMDA is an agreement between the Government of Nunavut and Service Canada to deliver skill and career-building programs across Nunavut.  Programs under the LMDA are designated to meet the needs of unemployed workers through employment preparation, skills training and job placement.
