Senior Fuel Subsidy

The Senior Fuel Subsidy program helps to offset the high cost of household heating fuel for seniors who own their own homes. Eligible seniors are reimbursed full costs up to a maximum number of liters of fuel. The maximum allowable subsidy is based on the community in which the applicant resides and ranges from 2,500 and 3,175 liters of fuel per eligible applicant. The maximum allowable income threshold is based on homeowner rather than household income.

Who Can Participate?

Nunavummiut who are 60 years of age or over and own their home are eligible.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for this subsidy, applicants must:

  • Live in Nunavut
  • Be 60 years or over
  • Own the home in which they live
  • Meet the allowable maximum net household income threshold
  • NOT be in receipt of Income Support

How to Apply:

Community Income Support Workers can provide application forms.
The following documents will be required to complete applications:

Senior Fuel Subsidy Application form
Statement and Authorization form
Birth certificate
Social Insurance
Number Health Care Plan card
Income Tax Notice of Assessment (previous year) for all members of the household
Title, deed or mortgage documents

Applicants who are denied the subsidy can appeal decisions within 30 days to the Director of Career and Early Childhood Services.
