Student Records and Assessment in Nunavut

The Student Records Assessment office, based in Pangnirtung, provides support to schools in terms of historical student record keeping, as well, math, language assessment and program, Teacher and Principal evaluation.

Student Records and the Student Information System

Student record collection in Nunavut is mandated by the Education Act. The purpose is to maintain current information on students in order to help educators manage schools as well as produce necessary reports. The data that is collected includes areas such as student demographics, achievement and attendance. In order to enhance its capability to retain accurate records, the Department of Education is currently in the process of implementing a new Student Records database to enhance the collection of student data in Nunavut. This new central student information system will be introduced that will provide enhanced data collection and reporting capabilities. This initiative also aims at streamlining and unifying data collection in Nunavut and providing Nunavut educators with refined views to student achievement.

The Student Registrar

The Student Registrar ensures students receive full credits for their efforts in high school, as well, processes diploma and transcript requests from students moving on to post-secondary education.

Student Assessment and Evaluation

The Student Assessment and Evaluation Office is responsible for researching and developing student assessment tools, strategies, and programs that:

  • Support the vision of a Nunavut education system built on IQ societal values, beliefs, and perspectives
  • Are culturally and linguistically appropriate to Nunavut
  • Provide valid and reliable evidence of student learning and achievement
  • Reflect current best practices the area of educational assessment
  • Meet the needs of Nunavut’s K-12  students, parents, teachers, and the public
  • Enhance teaching and student learning
